What Is A Root Canal?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontics, is a dental procedure used to treat infections in the root canal system in the centre of your tooth. If you’ve ever had a tooth infection, you’ll know how incredibly painful they can be.
Problems in the tooth root can make everyday things unbearable. You might experience pain when biting or chewing, swollen gums and cheeks, or you might be unable to eat or drink anything too hot or too cold.
What causes root canal infections?
Root canal infections are not rare and they can be easily caused by a variety of causes including:
● Deep decay
● Repeated dental procedures on the tooth
● A crack or chip in the tooth
● Leaky fillings
If you have any of the above and are at high risk of a root canal infection, it’s important to maintain a good level of oral hygiene. But even this sometimes does not stop an infection.
Regular dental checkups can help us to identify and treat infections before they become more problematic.
The Root Canal Procedure
A root canal is commonly completed in multiple visits. We thoroughly clean and enlarge the root canal so it can be easily filled. This can sometimes take a few visits to complete. Don’t worry though, we’ll give you a temporary filling to seal the tooth in between each appointment.
When the work is finished, you’ll come back to us to have your temporary filling removed and have the special root canal filling put in instead.
We’ll then seal the tooth using composite material to help prevent future infections. If necessary, we may also place a crown to cover the tooth after the procedure to make it stronger.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some answers to the questions we receive the most about our services.
If we missed anything, please do not hesitate to contact us. We’ll be happy to help
For your root canal treatment, you’ll be given a local anaesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. You should not feel any pain at all. Your restored tooth may be sensitive for a few days after your final treatment but it won’t be too painful.
We recommend over-the-counter painkillers to relieve any discomfort and, if you need to, you can always come back to us for a check-up if swelling persists.
If you’re experiencing toothache, it’s possible it might be caused by an infection. If the infection has caused an abscess, you may need antibiotics to clear the infection before treatment can begin. Taking antibiotics is not an effective treatment for this problem.
It’s important to see a dentist as soon as you notice a toothache, even if it goes away on its own. A lot of people assume that the problem has resolved once their toothache has gone away. This isn’t the case, and the end of your toothache could be a sign that the infection is worse than before. This often means that the pulp in your tooth has died and the infection has advanced Our qualified and patient-focused dentists are the experts in treating these infections and getting you back to feeling like yourself again. We can do this by removing the germs causing the infection either through a root canal procedure or an extraction.
Root canal treatments have a success rate of up to 90% in general when carried out by a qualified and experienced professional. When paired with good oral hygiene, the success rate may be even higher.
Giving up smoking if you smoke and cutting down your sugar consumption also helps to prevent the need for further root canal treatment. If an infection returns, the treatment can be repeated.
This can depend on the condition and type of tooth involved. For example, your incisors and canines only have one root per tooth, whereas molars usually have around three.
Depending on the number of root canals infected and the condition of your tooth overall, your procedure could take between 20 and 75 minutes per appointment.
You will usually have a minimum of two appointments with us; one to remove the infection, and another to seal the tooth.
